What is Youth Connect?
Parkinson’s disease doesn’t just affect those diagnosed – it impacts the lives of carepartners, families, and loved ones. For youth and young adults, the experience can bring unique challenges that often go unrecognized. To help bridge this gap, Parkinson Society British Columbia is proud to introduce YouthConnect—a new program created to support, empower, and connect young people impacted by Parkinson’s in their families.
YouthConnect is a new initiative by Parkinson Society BC designed specifically for young adults (ages 17–26) in British Columbia who have a parent or close family member living with Parkinson’s disease. It offers a supportive community through online meetings and in-person events, providing a space to connect with peers, share experiences, and feel understood.
How the Program Works
YouthConnect fosters connection and support through two key components:
Online Support Group
This virtual space offers a platform to share your experiences, receive encouragement, and connect with other young adults who understand the unique challenges of having a loved one with Parkinson’s disease.
In-Person Meetings
Held monthly in various regions across British Columbia, these outings provide opportunities to build friendships, create a local community, and engage in different activities together in person.
How Can I Get Involved?
YouthConnect offers meaningful ways for young adults to connect, lead, and make a difference:
- Become a Member
Members can take part in online support group meetings and local in-person gatherings designed to build friendships, share experiences, and foster a sense of community. - Become a Regional Ambassador
Do you enjoy bringing people together? As a Regional Ambassador (one per region in BC), you’ll help organize monthly outings, connect with local members, and serve as a key contact for the program in your area. It’s a great opportunity to take initiative and build leadership skills. - Become an Online Facilitator
This volunteer position supports the overall coordination of YouthConnect. The Online Facilitator leads virtual support group meetings, mentors Regional Ambassadors, and ensures the program runs smoothly. If you’re highly organized and a strong communicator, this could be a rewarding way to make an impact.
