The World Parkinson Coalition (WPC), in collaboration with Parkinson Society BC, PD Avengers, and AbbVie, has launched the “Parkinson Ready” program in Vancouver. This initiative aims to reduce stigma and enhance support for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease (PD) by training key front-line workers across the city. The program will provide specialized 75-minute training sessions, including a Q&A, to front-of-house workers, security personnel, public service, and hospitality industry leaders. The training is designed to prepare Vancouver for the growing number of residents and tourists living with PD, ensuring they receive a welcoming and safe experience.
Joanne Baker, CEO of Parkinson Society BC, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “We are honoured to be a part of the Parkinson Ready initiative, which will play a critical role in increasing awareness and knowledge of the disease. The tools developed for this training hold potential for future use across the province, helping ensure that people with Parkinson’s are treated with the dignity and understanding they deserve.”
The knowledge gained from this program will enable leaders in Vancouver to support their communities, including the approximately 17,500 people living with PD in Vancouver and across British Columbia. This initiative is expected to create a lasting impact, fostering a culture of understanding and empathy throughout the city and beyond.
Parkinson Ready trainings will be held on November 25 and 26 in downtown Vancouver. Businesses and groups interested in participating in or hosting a training session can contact Julie Winn.
