Understanding Cognitive Changes and Parkinson’s: Supporting the Whole Person

Join us for a compassionate and informative webinar exploring the relationship between cognitive changes and Parkinson’s disease, with a focus on identity, agency, strategies, and honouring the whole person behind the diagnosis. Join registered clinical counsellor and former nurse, Tricia Wallace. Tricia has extensive experience working with adults in the field of mental health, specializing on aging and chronic conditions. Drawing on her diverse background, Tricia recognizes the importance of a strength-based, holistic approach to living with Parkinson’s disease that includes emotional support and skill-building for individuals and their families.

We’ll begin by looking at cognitive changes that can occur in Parkinson’s and how these shifts may influence daily life. This session aims to reduce fear and uncertainty by offering clear explanations and practical insight into topics such as:

  • How Parkinson’s can affect thinking, memory, attention, and processing.
  • An overview of the different types of dementia and how they relate to Parkinson’s.
  • Maintaining a sense of identity, agency, and protection as we evolve through life.
  • Supportive strategies for both individuals with Parkinson’s and their carepartners.

Tricia will share practical communication approaches, including how to build connection, trust, and rapport before making requests or introducing changes. These tools can help reduce stress, support dignity, and strengthen relationships at home, in the community, and in care settings. Whether you’re living with Parkinson’s, supporting someone who is, or working in care or health services, this session offers compassionate guidance and real-world tools for everyday interactions.
