Edith Elliott has been an integral supporter of Parkinson Society BC (PSBC) for almost a decade. Her Parkinson’s journey began in 2004 when her husband, Morris, was diagnosed with the disease. Recalling that time, Edith says “we had no idea what this disease was or how it would affect our lives.”

After searching online, Edith and Morris found PSBC, and began attending support group meetings in Maple Ridge. At the time, these were held in the mornings, which was a challenge for the pair. “It was too difficult for Morris to get up and get going,” says Edith. Despite this, she continued to attend the local carepartner meeting, even after Morris was hospitalized, and entered into extended care. “I am so glad that I continued to do so,” she says. “This is where I received the support and understanding of others who were going through the same challenges as me.”
Since then, Edith has paid it forward to her community in incredible ways. She took on a role as her support group’s facilitator, and thanks to her efforts, they have seen an increase in attendance.
Two years into her role as facilitator, Edith was approached to organize a local Parkinson SuperWalk for the growing community. With just 12 days to prepare, the support group pulled it off and raised just over $2,000. With Edith at the helm, the Walk has grown more and more each year, with the 2018 event raising over $22,000!
Edith has been honoured to be voted in as support group facilitator for the past eight years, and volunteer coordinator of the Parkinson SuperWalk for the past seven. When describing the individuals she works with, she says they are “strong and supportive of each other, and welcoming to all who join [them] in this challenge.”
Without Edith, the Parkinson’s community in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows would not be what it is today. “With Parkinson Society of BC as our guide, and with all the support they provide, we hope to continue to help all those who need help and knowledge to live strong,” says Edith.
