DESCRIPTION:Planning for Future Care: A Carepartner Perspective \nJoin us for a compassionate and practical webinar for carepartners supporting someone living with Parkinson’s. Planning for future care often raises important questions: When might extra support be needed? What care options are available? What costs should be considered? And how can planning honour your loved one’s preferences\, independence\, and quality of life? She understands how care needs can evolve over time and the importance of supporting both the person with Parkinson’s and their carepartner in making care decisions that uphold dignity\, autonomy\, and quality of life. \nTogether\, we’ll explore: \n\nRecognizing when additional support may be helpful\, while honouring individual choices and independence\nUnderstanding different types of care\, including companionship\, personal care\, respite\, and overnight support\nPreparing ahead with key information\, home safety considerations\, and conversations about care preferences and wishes\nCreating flexible care plans that balance safety\, independence\, and quality of life\nCollaborating with care providers and knowing when adjustments may be needed\nSupporting carepartner well-being through stress management\, respite options\, and realistic expectations\nConsidering costs\, funding options\, care pathways\, and thoughtful questions to ask agencies\n\nThis webinar is designed to leave carepartners feeling informed\, supported\, and empowered to navigate care planning alongside their loved one. It also creates a space to feel acknowledged\, validated\, and less alone in the caregiving journey. \nWhether you are just beginning your carepartner role or responding to changing needs\, this session offers compassionate guidance to support planning that is person-centered\, respectful\, and grounded in shared decision-making. \nPlease note: This webinar will be recorded and made available on our Youtube channel after the webinar has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\nParkinson Society BC appreciates all gifts\, as they allow us to continue to offer programs people with Parkinson’s disease and their carepartners rely on. SUMMARY:Global Symposium: Does Parkinson’s Begin in the Gut?
DESCRIPTION:Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a multifaceted and evolving condition that impacts each person in unique ways. As research advances\, new perspectives are reshaping how we understand where Parkinson’s begins\, what influences its progression\, and how lifestyle factors-from diet to environment-can play a role in risk and management. \nThis May\, Parkinson Society British Columbia invites you to expand your knowledge through our Global Symposium Series\, a three-part online event featuring leading international experts sharing the latest in PD research and care. Each session is designed to inform\, inspire\, and empower people with Parkinson’s\, carepartners\, and health professionals alike. \nSession 1: Does Parkinson’s Begin in the Gut? Rethinking the Origins of the Disease I Dr. Per Borghammer\, MD\, PhD\, Clinical Professor I Thursday\, May 22 | 11:00am – 12:00pm PT \nIs Parkinson’s disease truly a brain-first disorder – or could it begin in the gut? In this compelling session\, Dr. Per Borghammer\, Clinical Professor in the Department of Nuclear Medicine and PET-Centre at Aarhus University (Denmark)\, will explore the groundbreaking “gut-first” hypothesis and what it could mean for the future of Parkinson’s care. \nDrawing from cutting-edge imaging studies and clinical research\, Dr. Borghammer will examine how early signs of Parkinson’s may originate in the gastrointestinal system and spread to the brain via the vagus nerve. He’ll also discuss the implications for earlier detection\, preventative strategies\, and more personalized treatments. \nThis session invites people with Parkinson’s and carepartners to rethink how the disease develops and how that understanding could transform diagnosis and therapy in years to come. \nAbout Dr. Per Borghammer: \nDr. Per Borghammer is a leading expert in clinical imaging and neurodegenerative disease research\, with a focus on Parkinson’s disease. He is a professor of nuclear medicine and neuroscience at the Medical Faculty of Aarhus University in Denmark. \nDr. Per Borghammer explores how Parkinson’s disease begins and progresses\, with a special focus on the early stages. His research investigates whether the disease may\, in some cases\, start outside the brain—such as in the gut—before spreading through the nervous system. \nUsing advanced brain imaging\, laboratory research\, and animal models\, Dr. Borghammer studies how Parkinson’s spreads and why it affects people differently. His team is also developing new scanning tools to help detect the disease earlier and better understand non-motor symptoms like sleep disturbances and digestive issues. \nHis work is funded by leading organizations\, including the Lundbeck foundation\, The Michael J. Fox Foundation\, Danish Research Council and Danish Parkinson Association. \n\n\n\n\n\nParkinson Society BC appreciates all gifts\, as they allow us to continue to offer programs people with Parkinson’s disease and their carepartners rely on. SUMMARY:Victoria Regional Conference
DESCRIPTION:Parkinson’s disease is a complex and unique condition. Join Parkinson Society BC on March 22 for an engaging afternoon of learning in Victoria. This in-person regional conference offers an immersive and interactive opportunity to gain insights from leading experts while connecting with others in the Parkinson’s community. \nLight refreshments will be provided. Please contact Alana Dhillon with any dietary restrictions no later than March 17. \nSession 1: Navigating the Intersection of Motor and Non-Motor Symptoms during Off-Times | Dr. Keiran Tuck\, Movement Disorder Specialist \nWhen Parkinson’s medications wear off\, motor and non-motor symptoms often intensify and become interconnected. For example\, motor symptoms like rigidity and stiffness can heighten stress and anxiety\, while autonomic dysfunction linked to these motor challenges may lead to non-motor issues such as excessive sweating\, temperature regulation problems\, blood pressure fluctuations\, and gastrointestinal concerns. \nIn this session\, Dr. Tuck will provide an in-depth overview of “off-times\,” including their causes and effects. Learn how motor symptoms during these periods can worsen non-motor challenges—such as bradykinesia contributing to constipation—and gain practical strategies to manage these overlapping difficulties effectively. \nSession 2: Managing Stress and Restoring Autonomic Balance | Claudia Walker\, Occupational Therapist  \nLiving with a chronic condition like Parkinson’s can create significant stress\, which can worsen both motor and non-motor symptoms. Claudia Walker\, an occupational therapist specializing in autonomic self-regulation\, will explore how chronic stress impacts the autonomic nervous system\, leading to states of ‘fight or flight’ (hypervigilance\, irritability\, and restlessness) or ‘collapse’ (apathy\, inactivity\, and withdrawal). \nWhile these states are normal in brief instances\, staying in them too long can harm overall well-being. This session will explain how the autonomic nervous system works\, why it can become ‘stuck\,’ and introduce strategies to regain balance\, improve resilience\, and self-regulate effectively. \nThis session is designed for people living with Parkinson’s and their caregivers. \nSession 3: Parkinson’s Medications Demystified | Amy Tran\, Pharmacist \nJoin Victoria-based pharmacist Amy Tran for an informative session on Parkinson’s disease (PD) medications. Learn about key treatments\, their effects\, and how they manage PD symptoms. This session will address common concerns about medication regimens\, fluctuations\, and new options like Vyalev\, now covered in British Columbia. \nWhether you’re living with Parkinson’s or caring for someone who is\, this session will provide practical insights to optimize treatment and improve quality of life. \nThe conference will also include two exercise breaks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that registration will close on Friday\, March 21 at 3:00 PM. \nParking Details: Complimentary parking for conference attendees is available in the hotel underground located at the back of the hotel off Quebec Street. Attendees do NOT need to purchase a ticket; however\, attendees will need to provide their license plate number at time of registration check-in. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParkinson Society BC appreciates all gifts\, as they allow us to continue to offer programs people with Parkinson’s disease and their carepartners rely on.
