Together\, these symptoms can make daily life challenging. This session will explore how motor and non-motor symptoms affect quality of life and how a comprehensive treatment approach can support well-being and\, in some cases\, help slow disease progression. \nDr. Tara Rastin will provide an overview of PD symptoms and discuss both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment strategies to help individuals manage their condition effectively. \nSession 2: Voice\, Cognitive Communication\, and Swallowing (Part 1) | Jasmine Cload\, Speech Language Pathologist \nDiscover the essential role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in addressing communication and swallowing difficulties in PD.  In this informative session\, Jasmine will highlight key signs and symptoms while sharing effective management strategies for all stages of PD. SUMMARY:PD Warrior Level 1 + 2 Certification Course (Kamloops) - Healthcare Professionals
DESCRIPTION:PD Warrior is an evidence-based\, neuro-active exercise approach designed to improve function\, quality of life\, and long-term exercise behavior in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). It was created in Australia by specialist neurological physiotherapist\, Dr. Melissa McConaghy. Parkinson Society BC (PSBC) is excited to offer the PD Warrior Level 1 and Level 2 course bundle\, with Level 2 taking place in-person on Saturday\, April 26 in Kamloops. The bundle is regularly priced at $749; however\, PSBC will heavily subsidize the course to increase the number of exercise professionals with Parkinson-specific training in the community. \nTo learn more about PD Warrior\, please visit: https://pdwarrior.com/ \nWho the course is for: \nThe PD Warrior course is open to all physiotherapists\, occupational therapists\, kinesiologists\, and exercise professionals. New graduates are also welcome. \nLevel 1: \nLevel 1 is an online theory course (~15 hours) that is a pre-requisite for the in-person Level 2 workshop. The course will give you the foundation to apply the core concepts of this intensive and neuro-active exercise approach immediately to your sessions and will cover: \n\nThe latest evidence underpinning intensive and neuro-active exercise prescription\nThe pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease\nHow to tailor exercise effectively for the three different types of Parkinson’s\nThe seven core principles of neuroplasticity and how to implement them effectively\nHow to create an enriched and motivating exercise environment\nHow to empower your clients and create long-term exercise behavior\nchange\n\nLevel 1 will be completed online\, and access will be provided after registration closes. \nLevel 2:\nLevel 2 is an immersive\, 8-hour\, in-person course designed to build on the theory covered in Level 1. This fast-paced and practical workshop focuses on developing transferable skills in clinical reasoning and effective coaching\, tailored for working with individuals living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). \nParticipants will engage in hands-on learning with live clients\, including assessment and treatment planning\, ensuring they leave equipped to confidently apply the core principles of this neuro-active exercise approach. Additionally\, participants will both lead and participate in a PD Warrior circuit class to solidify practical skills. \nActive participation is a key component of this workshop. Please come dressed and prepared to exercise vigorously! If you have any injuries or limitations\, kindly inform your trainer on the day of the course. As you’ll be working with live clients\, professionalism\, sensitivity\, and confidentiality are essential throughout the session. \nInstructor: Shelly Yu — PSBC neuro-physiotherapist and Level 5 PD Warrior trainer\nShelly Yu is the Society’s physiotherapist\, leading Parkinson’s provincial exercise programs and spearheading educational outreach initiatives across British Columbia. With a wealth of experience from her work in the United Kingdom as a specialist neurological physiotherapist\, Shelly has contributed to various clinics\, including spasticity and dystonia\, facial rehabilitation\, hand therapy\, vestibular care\, and movement disorders. \nA licensed PD Warrior clinician and Level 5 PD Warrior trainer\, Shelly is deeply committed to empowering individuals with Parkinson’s disease. SUMMARY:Communication and Swallow Workshop - Williams Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive workshop led by registered speech-language pathologist Jasmine Cload\, focusing on the communication and swallowing challenges often faced by people with Parkinson’s. This workshop is open to those currently experiencing these challenges\, as well as those looking to address them proactively. \nThe workshop utilizes methods from the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment® (LSVT)\, which have been clinically proven to improve communication for individuals with Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions. \nEven if you are not currently experiencing communication or swallowing difficulties\, participating in this workshop can help you reduce stress\, frustration\, and potential complications in the future. For those currently facing these issues\, this session offers evidence-based tools to address common problems like disordered articulation\, diminished facial expression\, and impaired swallowing. \nParticipants will receive a questionnaire via email after registration\, which must be completed before the workshop. \nPlease note that a catered lunch will be provided at the event.
